Does ServiceM8 Text Back Missed Calls? The Honest Answer

By Rick, founder of Tradie Texts · Published 20 July 2026

ServiceM8 is job-management software for Australian trade businesses: quoting, scheduling, invoicing, and the SMS you send a customer about a job. On its own it does not automatically text someone the second you miss their call. That only happens if you bolt on the separate ServiceM8 Phone add-on and pay for its AI Phone Agent tier. If you came here for a straight yes or no, that's the no, with an asterisk, and the rest of this explains the asterisk honestly.

I'll say up front: my own product, Tradie Texts, does missed-call text-back, so I'm not a neutral party. I've kept the ServiceM8 facts below to what's on their own pricing and support pages as of their September 2025 revision, and I've linked them so you can check me.

What SMS does ServiceM8 actually send, and who triggers it?

ServiceM8's SMS is genuinely good, but it's SMS you send about a job that's already in motion: appointment confirmations and reschedules, an "on my way" heads-up, quotes and invoices, quote follow-ups, job and access updates, payment requests, and replies to a customer enquiry. Two-Way SMS, where the customer's reply drops straight into the job's Diary, is free on every plan.

The core plans bundle a jobs cap and an SMS allowance together: Free at $0/month (30 jobs, one user, no SMS), then Starter $29, Growing $79, Premium $149, and Premium Plus $349, with overage messages around 10c each. There's no per-user fee.

Notice the common thread. A person, or a job changing status, triggers every one of those messages. None of them fires because a call rang out and nobody picked up.

Is there a built-in missed-call auto-text feature?

No. I looked across the pricing page, the communications features page, and ServiceM8's own support article on the kinds of SMS you can send, and none of them mention detecting a missed call or auto-replying to an unanswered one.

The closest thing in the core product is the Online Booking SMS Extension: after a call, you manually fire off a text with a link to your online enquiry form. It's a handy tool, but you have to remember to send it, which is the exact thing you can't do when you're up a ladder with both hands full. That's the whole reason missed-call text-back exists as a category: the value is in it happening without you.

What ServiceM8 Phone's After-Hours Agent changes, and what it costs

In September 2025 ServiceM8 revised a separate product, ServiceM8 Phone, a call-handling add-on that sits on top of your core subscription. Three tiers:

  • Connect, $29/month — 500 minutes, caller ID, call recording and transcription, voicemail, after-hours routing. No AI agent.
  • Connect Plus, $49/month — everything in Connect, plus the AI Phone Agent.
  • Unlimited, $199/month — unlimited minutes plus the AI Phone Agent.

The AI Phone Agent, on Connect Plus and Unlimited, includes an After-Hours mode that answers after-hours calls, handles common questions, texts the caller a booking-form link, flags urgent issues for staff, and logs a message for business-hours follow-up. Customers who already had ServiceM8 Phone before 19 September 2025 got this mode without moving tier.

That is genuine automatic after-hours handling, and credit where it's due. Two things to be clear about, though. It's an add-on on top of your core plan, so roughly $20 to $170 a month more depending on tier. And it's a full AI voice product: a synthetic voice answers the phone and talks to your customer. Some people are fine with that; some hang up the second they hear a robot. I won't quote you a per-call usage fee for the AI, because ServiceM8 doesn't publish one and I'm not going to invent a number.

Here's the fair reading: the fact that ServiceM8 built an after-hours agent at all is a decent signal that missed after-hours calls are a real, separate problem worth solving. It validates the category rather than contradicting it.

Adding real missed-call text-back alongside ServiceM8

If you like ServiceM8 for the jobs, quotes and invoices, and plenty of tradies rightly do, you don't have to rip any of it out to cover the missed call itself. A missed-call text-back service runs alongside your existing number and only steps in when a call goes unanswered. Here's what each path actually costs to get an automatic response to a missed call:

PathRoughly what you payWhat the caller gets when you miss the call
ServiceM8 core only$29–$349/monthNothing automatic. You manually send a booking-form link if you remember
Core + Phone ConnectCore + $29/monthVoicemail and after-hours routing, but still no auto-text and no AI
Core + Phone Connect Plus / UnlimitedCore + $49–$199/monthAn AI voice answers the call, texts a booking link, and flags urgent jobs
Core + a missed-call text-back serviceCore + from $49/monthAn SMS from your business within about 5 seconds, then an AI conversation that asks what the job is, where, and how urgent

That last row is the category Tradie Texts is in, so read it knowing I built it. The mechanism is different from ServiceM8's voice agent: nothing answers the phone with a robot voice. Your phone rings you as normal, and only when a call goes unanswered does the caller get a text and a short SMS conversation. Different trade-off. Some customers would rather text than talk to a machine; some are the reverse. Pick the one that suits your callers.

What to check before you decide

SaaS pricing pages change without much notice, so re-check ServiceM8's current numbers on the links above before you commit. And do the two-minute test on yourself first: open your recent calls, count the missed ones from numbers you don't recognise over the last fortnight, and ask how many might have been jobs. If the honest answer is "a few," something should be answering them, whether that's ServiceM8 Phone's agent, a text-back service, or a person.

If you want to try the text-back version I built, it works alongside your existing number, texts missed callers within about 5 seconds, qualifies the job over SMS, escalates real emergencies to your phone, and files every lead with the full transcript. Built for Australia only. Plans start at $49/month (Solo), with Crew at $129 and Fleet at $299, and the trial is 14 days with no credit card: start it here.

Quick answers

Does ServiceM8 send an automatic text when I miss a call? Not in the core product. Its SMS covers job confirmations, quotes, invoices and replies you or a status change trigger. Automatic handling of a missed or after-hours call only exists if you add ServiceM8 Phone and pay for the Connect Plus or Unlimited tier, which answers by AI voice rather than texting back.

Is ServiceM8's SMS free? Two-Way SMS is free on every plan. Outbound job SMS comes out of your plan's bundled allowance, with overage around 10c a message.

Do I have to choose between ServiceM8 and a text-back service? No. They do different jobs. Keep ServiceM8 for quoting, scheduling and invoicing, and run a text-back service alongside it purely to catch the calls you miss.
